            Authentic Happiness

            Martin E. P. Seligman

            2002, 336 pages

            A national bestseller, Authentic Happiness launched the revolutionary new science of Positive Psychology—and sparked a coast-to-coast debate on the nature of real happiness. According to esteemed psychologist and bestselling author Martin Seligman, happiness is not the result of good genes or luck. Real, lasting happiness comes from focusing on one's personal strengths rather than weaknesses—and working with them to improve all aspects of one's life. Using practical exercises, brief tests, and a dynamic website program, Seligman shows readers how to identify their highest virtues and use them in ways they haven't yet considered. Accessible and proven, Authentic Happiness is the most powerful work of popular psychology in years.}}}}}}}

            Based on scientific research, the book offers a framework, as well as practical guidance, for what can make us genuinely, profoundly and persistently happy. Key Takeaways

            Happiness is not just the result of the environment (something happens and "makes you happy") or of genetics / your personality - a good part of is enabled by how we choose to look at our past, present, and future, and by the extent to which we are aware of and find ways to use more our signature strengths. And much of all this can be learned. --- Details: --- A simple self-assessment tool is provided to help us understand our own signature strengths from a list of 24: Wisdom and knowledge (Curiosity/interest in the world, Love of learning, Judgement/critical thinking/open-mindedness, Ingenuity/originality/practical intelligence/street smarts, Social intelligence/personal intelligence/emotional intelligence, Perspective); Courage (Valor and bravery, Perseverance / industry /diligence, Integrity / genuineness /honesty); Humanity and Love (Kindness and generosity, Loving and allowing oneself to be loved, Justice, Citizenship/duty/teamwork/loyalty, Fairness and equity, Leadership); Temperance (Self-control, Prudence /discretion/caution, Humility and modesty), Transcendence (Appreciation of beauty and excellence, Gratitude, Spirituality/Sense of purpose/Faith/Religiousness, Forgiveness and mercy, Playfulness and humor, Zest/passion/enthusiasm). The test, as well as other self-assessment questionnaires, are available on the website https://www.authentichappiness.sas.upenn.edu/. Recrafting our job or environment allows us to spent at least some time using our signature strengths, which would enable moments of "flow" (the state of gratification that we enter when we feel completely engaged in what we are doing). --- Even taking an optimist's vs. a pessimist's approach, or catching ourselves when we "catastrophize" and learning to dispute those catastrophic thoughts - can be learned, and the book offers tools for that. Pessimists automatically think that the cause is permanent, pervasive, and persona; optimists, in contrast, interpret their setbacks as surmountable, particular to a single problem, and resulting from temporary circumstances or other people. Learned optimism - disputing the catastrophic thoughts (and there is a method for that). --- The book teaches us how we can look with satisfaction about the past (satisfaction, contentment, fulfillment, pride, and serenity), with optimism about the future (with faith, trust, confidence, hope, optimism - and that optimism and hope can be built), and how to enable happiness about the present, increasing momentary happiness and enriching the present with moments of gratification.

            Relevance

            For me, it confirmed why some activities feel so genuinely rewarding. The book can be useful for anybody trying to understand how to bring more meaning into their lives, and even more so for anybody struggling with "learned helplessness". Also useful for parents trying to raise happy and resilient kids, and for managers interested in optimizing their team's performance and degree of fulfillment.
